D.C. Colleagues lead the way
|
 |
The weeks of September 17 and October 15 see us welcoming our colleagues from Washington D.C. Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation. The CYITC group will be visiting New Orleans to present youth development strategies and successes to our community leaders. Their youth development training, D.C. BEST, has been extremely successful in addressing some of the same obstacles our youth face.
We hope to be able to incorporate the work they have already begun in programs and institutions throughout the New Orleans area. If your group works specifically with youth ages 12-19 and you would like to know more about this process please email Shelley.
Applications for participation in the Youth Worker Training Program (10/15-19) are due October 1, 2007.

Study Finds After-School Program Reduces Juvenile Crime
ALICE WALTON, Los Angeles
City News Service, Inc
"Los Angeles Unified students who participated in a city-sponsored after-school program were less likely to commit a crime, according to a UCLA study released today. Students who attended L.A.'s BEST program at least 15 days a month were 30 percent less likely to participate in criminal activities than students who did not attend the program, the UCLA's National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing found."
This important research is now available on their website, link to L.A.'s BEST and read the complete article with details on the proof that afterschool can reduce crime!
