Early Fall 2007

School and afterschool are well underway throughout the community and we are thrilled to share the new year with you all. Please take a minute to catch-up with all the work and opportunities that are available now in our afterschool community.

Enjoy your work and thank you for all you do towards rebuilding New Orleans one afternoon at a time.

RSD Alert: New afterschool RFP

The Recovery School District has posted a RFP for Extended School Day Programs (bid number 678PUR81577) on the DOE LaPAC website. This RFP has an extremely short deadline - October 1, 2007 with the anticipation that contracts will be executed on October 3, 2007. Any program that wishes to provide enrichment and/or tutorial service afterschool at RSD operated schools MUST complete this RFP.

The Pre-Proposal conference is scheduled to be held at RSD (1641 Poland Avenue) on Friday, September 21, 10:00 AM. Please contact Elise Adams the Recovery School District Grants Specialist with any questions ASAP: elise.adams@rsdla.net, 504.373.6200 ext. 20021.

D.C. Colleagues lead the way

The weeks of September 17 and October 15 see us welcoming our colleagues from Washington D.C. Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation. The CYITC group will be visiting New Orleans to present youth development strategies and successes to our community leaders. Their youth development training, D.C. BEST, has been extremely successful in addressing some of the same obstacles our youth face.

We hope to be able to incorporate the work they have already begun in programs and institutions throughout the New Orleans area. If your group works specifically with youth ages 12-19 and you would like to know more about this process please email Shelley.

Applications for participation in the Youth Worker Training Program (10/15-19) are due October 1, 2007.

Support for GNOAP

With assistance from the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, we have been able to secure funding that will allow GNOAP to continue our work convening, training, surveying, funding, and advocating for New Orleans afterschool providers; particularly as it relates to at-risk youth.

Look for new initiatives in the coming months and increased opportunities to participate in our advocacy efforts.

In Attendance

In late October, Shelley will be in attendance at the Building Bridges Conference in San Francisco, CA. The conference will bring together afterschool intermediaries from urban areas around the country to discuss how best to align afterschool and high school for youth success. If you have a program or theory you want Shelley to share at the conference please just email her before October 19th. Full report to come!

Afterschool vs. Juvenile Crime = RESULTS!

Study Finds After-School Program Reduces Juvenile Crime
ALICE WALTON, Los Angeles
City News Service, Inc

"Los Angeles Unified students who participated in a city-sponsored after-school program were less likely to commit a crime, according to a UCLA study released today. Students who attended L.A.'s BEST program at least 15 days a month were 30 percent less likely to participate in criminal activities than students who did not attend the program, the UCLA's National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing found."

This important research is now available on their website, link to L.A.'s BEST and read the complete article with details on the proof that afterschool can reduce crime!

Data for YOU

The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center has another great resource for non-profits as you make the case with funders; visit www.gnocdc.org to find the New Orleans Index. This monthly report tracks the recovery process in Orleans Parish including information on population, housing, economic indicators, schools, and more.

Also, remember to visit the After School Alliance website for a lot of publications with national data and research that supports the need for afterschool and summer programs.

Operation REACH Opportunity

The official launch of the Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund, a new and exciting youth philanthropy initiative, took place Tuesday, August 28, 2007. To nominate youth associated with your organization/school that you think would be assets to the Youth Advisory Council of the Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund please contact Kertrina K. Watson at Operation REACH, Inc. as soon as possible. This initiative takes advantage of our greatest and most diverse assets...our youth!
