Thank you and good work!
Our year is well underway with a wealth of projects and events; a big THANK YOU to all the participants at our first meeting with P/PV where we began planning to structure a coordinated citywide program for afterschool development. Chair meetings have begun and we will have updates and requests for participation at each month’s provider meetings.

CURRENT PROJECTS
|
 |
Afterschool Map and Directory
The long anticipated afterschool map and directory has been completed! The map provides a visual overview of where programs are located across the city, while the directory includes programming details for each location. VIA Link is now able to field calls from parents and community members and provide them with afterschool options based on location, student interest area, and/or providers.
Reporting Afterschool
Through data collected in provider surveys and directory applications we have been able to put together a white paper outlining the afterschool landscape in post-storm New Orleans. Please visit our online Resource Library to view or download a copy. We hope all will find it useful in outlining the needs and obstacles that face the afterschool community, as we continue to rebuild New Orleans one afternoon at a time.
Defining Needs
We continue to receive general requests from around the county to help afterschool. These tend to be very generous, but giver specific rather than recipient focused, i.e. group of teen volunteers during Spring Break who want to work with kids. In an effort to provide those interested in helping New Orleans afterschool providers we would like to hear from you! Please email Shelley with a 3 item wish list and whether your program would benefit from short-term volunteers.

Training on the road
Over the last few months we have been meeting with a group of afterschool providers in Baton Rouge and providing them training through support from Exxon/Mobile. It’s another great connection and has been rewarding for trainer and trainees! We do have capacity for training staff on site, so if you have a need around a particular topic let us know.

ADVOCACY
|
 |
Being a Player
February’s meeting focused on being an effective advocate for your organization. Gina led the group through definitions, action steps, and on-going goals for setting up an informed and successful advocacy plan for any nonprofit. If afterschool advocacy is something you’d like to play a specific role in email Shelley to get connected with our efforts.
Remember... the Louisiana State Legislative Session begins 4/30/07, and state-wide elections are scheduled for this fall, the time is NOW to make our voices and needs heard!
