We are excited to launch the Afterschool Partnership’s 10 for 2010 campaign, a public education platform to increase awareness about the critical need for Youth Opportunities in New Orleans and engage youth, parents, community members, elected officials, and ultimately candidates in a discussion about how to make Youth a priority for our city.

We have highlighted ten key policy recommendations necessary to transform our city, and are currently getting feedback from the public through October 16th, 2009. It is our hope that the 10 for 2010 campaign is a key first step to create an enduring conversation about the role our local government must play in ensuring success for all our children and youth. You can read more about 10 for 2010 on our website at: www.gnoafterschool.org.

Afterschool Partnership and the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation will provide a one-day overview of Advancing Youth Development (AYD) to 60 NOPD officers later this Fall. This collaboration seeks to expand and enhance police officer skills when working with New Orleans youth. We are pleased with NOPD commitment to this effort and are enthusiastic about the ways this experience will expand positive youth and police interactions.

Expanding Learning Time: Webinar Series
Expanding Learning Time: Webinar Series

Throughout Fall 2009, Afterschool Partnership will host a series of webinars for school board members, school superintendents, principals, and other key stakeholders highlighting several evidence-based expanded learning time initiatives that can be replicated in schools and districts across Louisiana as a key intervention to increase student achievement. Nationwide, education systems are rethinking the school day to effectively build the knowledge and skills all young people need to succeed in the 21st century.

The federal stimulus package, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and the proposed federal FY2010 budget both offer opportunities to institute successful expanded learning and summer learning time initiatives within many of our schools. Interested in learning more about federal education funding to support an Expanded Learning Time Initiative in your school? Contact Dara for more information.
