On April 2 - 4, 2009, the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) convenes over 3,000 afterschool professionals and stakeholders at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. NAA is one of the leading conventions for the afterschool field. The 2009 convention is also a joint gathering with the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Youth Mapping Initiative
|
 |
The Youth Mapping initiative continues with mapping well underway in Central City, St. Roch, Treme, and 7th Ward. Youth from each neighborhood have received training and participated in two Saturday mapping days. The young people will continue conducting block-by-block inventory of resources available to youth, such as safe places to learn; safe places to go; structured activities; and, places where they can connect with caring adults.
The data gathered will be posted on a web site created by youth called neworleans.ilivehere.info. This is a one-of-a-kind tool for youth in New Orleans, who benefit from knowing what opportunities are available to them by simply going on-line. Searches can be done by geographic area, neighborhood, resource name, or general services. Complete the youth resource survey to make sure your organization is included.

Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA)
Opportunity for summer programs
CADA provides FREE prevention education (available in English and Spanish) that leads students to explore the myths and discover the facts of alcohol and drug abuse through a 12-session research-based curriculum. CADA’s education modules consist of meeting with students twice a week for 45 minutes. Due to CADA's unique interactive approach, the prevention education modules can accommodate no more than a group of 30 participants. Several groups can be accommodated if your number of participants exceeds 30.
If you are interested in learning more about CADA’s prevention education, or would like to schedule modules in your school or community center this summer, please contact Carolyn Freema at (504) 362-4272 or freeman.carolyn@gmail.com.
