This month's E-newsletter is a bit lengthy, but definitely worth the read, full of information about current projects and news for providers. For New Orleans area providers there are details on opportunities in the community and ways you can be involved. Other local and national stakeholders will find a snapshot of our work and ways you can support the work of youth-serving organizations in New Orleans.

Thank you for your dedication to the youth of New Orleans and please keep in contact!

Meeting Change: 10/22

The date of this month's provider meeting has been changed to Wednesday, 10/22/2008. We will begin at 10am with a press announcement about the release of the Funding Map for Afterschool and Youth programs. The report, commissioned by the Afterschool Partnership, identifies local, state and federal monies being accessed by local providers and further indicates those funding streams not being adequately leveraged. The meeting will continue at 10:30am with more in our series on effective grant writing. The presentation from September's meeting is available now in our Resource Library.

Provider Survey: online NOW

Please take the Afterschool Partnership's
Fall 2008 Provider Survey (click here)

Compiled results will provide our community with a better understanding about the current landscape of afterschool and youth services in Greater New Orleans and how to more efficiently direct resources to local providers. DEADLINE: Wednesday, 10/08/2008.

Advancing Youth Development: DUE 10/10

The next 30-hour session for staff who work directly with Youth ages 10-24 years old is scheduled for 10/27-31 from 9am-2pm daily. We are proud to offer this training with the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation at no cost to local providers. Many New Orleans' groups, from those who work in small community based organizations to those working in schools and various government agencies, have found this to be an incredible boost to their training efforts and daily work.

The application is available online in our Resource Library. Completed applications DUE Friday, 10/10/2008. They can be mailed, faxed, or emailed to Shelley.

Lights on Afterschool: 10/16

Lights on Afterschool is an annual celebration of the work of afterschool programs around the country. This year the Afterschool Partnership will be sending out a press release highlighting the great work of New Orleans organizations and providing informational letters to our government officials on the local and state levels. SPOTLIGHT: Junior Achievement

Since 1919 nationally, and 1955 locally, Junior Achievement has creatively brought economics, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work-readiness training into schools and afterschools through hands-on, easy-to-implement learning programs. JA programs are available for every grade level and consistently receive superior reviews from independent evaluators. Outside evaluations continually show that students at each grade level who have participated in JA have a significantly better understanding of economic concepts, as demonstrated on objective-referenced tests, than their peers who have not been exposed to JA.

JA provides all necessary student and instructor materials and training for program implementers. No lesson plan creation is necessary. In school, JA programs are implemented by volunteers from the business community. In an afterschool setting, the programs are taught by the staff of the afterschool. JA reached over 8 million kids worldwide last year and Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans carried its mission of inspiring and preparing young people to successfully participate in our economy through workforce development, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy to 21,564 students in Southeastern Louisiana last year. For more information on volunteering with JA or getting JA in your classroom and/or afterschool, please contact Susie Dudis, Education Manager, at 504.569.8652 or susie@jagno.org . Visit us online at www.jagno.org.
