On this third anniversary of Katrina, we want to take a moment to reflect on positive steps that have been made over the past three years of recovery and renew ourselves for the work ahead.

Our journey towards a complete and healthy New Orleans remains a long one, with many obstacles still to be discovered and overcome. But we know it is through the relationships we build with groups and individuals, like you, that we will obtain our goal.

Thank you for your support and please remain involved as we strive towards access to quality afterschool for all the children of New Orleans!

TANF ASFA Update

After raising concerns regarding the 2008-2009 TANF After School for All (ASFA) program changes, the Afterschool Partnership successfully negotiated an agreement with Superintendent Paul Pastorek and Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members last week to provide assistance and input in the implementation of the new TANF ASFA program. Under the new 2008-2009 TANF After School for All, funding allocations are now made to eligible local education agencies (LEAs) with high priority/high need schools. LEAs are encouraged to partner with community- and faith-based service providers.

The Office of School and Community Support has pledged to provide technical assistance and support to create partnerships where possible. Providers are asked to contact Kartina Roberts, Section Administrator, School Support Programs at 225.342.3488 or the Department's toll-free number, 1.877.453.2721. You may also email her at kartina.roberts@la.gov.

What Did You Do After School?
From a star chef (Mario Batali) to an astrophysicist (Neil deGrasse Tyson), great achievers share memories of what they did after school in the 2007-08 Annual Report of The After-School Corporation (TASC). Development didn't stop at 3 PM in the young lives of the president of Harvard or the founder of Craigslist, who join others in recalling their artistic, athletic and intellectual after-school adventures. The report updates the progress of one of the most transformative public-private initiatives in New York City history, the development of a citywide after-school system. For more info, visit the TASC Web site (www.tascorp.org).

Harvard Complementary Learning Update
Educators, policymakers, and families increasingly agree: schools cannot do it alone. Children need multiple opportunities to learn and grow—at home, in school, and in the community. Complementary learning is a comprehensive strategy for addressing all of these needs and ensuring success for all children and youth. Complementary learning is the idea that a systemic approach—which intentionally integrates both school and nonschool supports—can better ensure that all children have the skills they need to succeed. Visit the Harvard Family Research Project (www.hfrp.org/complementary-learning) to learn more.
