After making it through a busy election season we find ourselves asking, "What does the presidential election mean for the fields of afterschool and summer learning?"
We believe the historic election of Senator Barack Obama has significant positive implications for the fields of afterschool and summer learning. President-elect Obama has been a long-time champion of summer learning and was recently honored for his leadership with a 2008 Champion of Summer Learning award from the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University. His commitment to providing opportunities for all our children and youth has also been evidenced by his support of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program and its expansion. We are extremely optimistic about the new prospects that could be possible though the Obama administration.

American Friends Service Committee is at work in the New Orleans area. Their Gulf Coast Program is working with youth, parents, teachers, and other community organizations to end the school-to-prison pipeline. The Gulf Coast Program is based on a comprehensive approach that includes the creation of a youth Leadership Institute to train a cadre of youth "peer educators."
