Afterschool Day at the Capitol is an annual event sponsored by the Afterschool Partnership and a statewide network of afterschool partners. The Day is a wonderful opportunity to engage legislators and other policymakers on the importance of afterschool and to highlight many of the afterschool and youth programs currently serving children and youth across Louisiana.

The Day will start with a networking breakfast and opening remarks at the State Library, Baton Rouge at 10:00 am. Lunch is on your own. The afternoon session will continue from 1:00 – 4:00 pm in the State Capitol Rotunda with tabling to highlight the successful afterschool and youth programs across the state. We will also have afternoon dance and musical performances from afterschool programs here in Baton Rouge.

Ways for Afterschool Providers from all over Louisiana to Get Involved:

ATTEND:
Please join us on May 28th! Bus transportation from New Orleans to Baton Rouge will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, RSVP required. The bus will leave from the Afterschool Partnership, 4240 Canal Street at 8:00 am and leave Baton Rouge at 4:00 pm. Cost is $10, cash and checks will be collected on the day of the event. Email Dennis Bagneris at dbagneris@gnoafterschool.org or fax the registration form available at www.gnoafterschool.org to reserve your seat today!

DISPLAY YOUR PROGRAM IN THE ROTUNDA:
The Afterschool Partnership is currently collecting posters, brochures, photos, and other informational materials from providers to display on the tables at the Rotunda. Even if you are unable to attend, we will gladly bring any information that highlights your afterschool programs.

We are asking providers to have their youth participants and/or staff create a poster about their programs. Posters can be artistic, informative and creative. We are also collecting letters written by children and youth in your programs to attach to informational packets that will be distributed to all legislators on the day of the event. The letters should be addressed “Dear Louisiana Legislator” and can be a picture, or describe what that child enjoys at afterschool (learning new things, the staff who work there, staying in a safe place while parent/caregiver is working, fun activities, etc). Please contact Dennis Bagneris at dbagneris@gnoafterschool.org if you are able to create a poster or write letters. All materials must be received by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27th.

SUMMER CAMPS AND YOUTH PROGRAMS:
You are welcome to plan a field trip and bring your youth to Day at the Capitol.

For more information or to be involved in these events, please contact Dara Lum, Director of Policy, Afterschool Partnership at (504) 304-9591 ext. 33 or at dlum@gnoafterschool.org
